Why that Website you paid Major $$$ for is not making you money

If you have any kind of business you run within your community, be it a service or selling of goods, you could probably greatly benefit from having some type of Website or Internet Presence.

Now I know in most cases when a small business owner like yourself wants to have a website built your first thought is that it must be a big pretty website with fancy flash pictures blinking all over the place, with maybe some music, and a shopping cart. You go to a web designer and they quote you a price of $15,000+. Cost of doing business. Right? So you paid the price and had the job done.

Let me tell you this, any Internet Marketer worth their salt will tell you that content is king when it comes to Websites.

One of my favorite questions to ask when I am at a speaking event about this subject is to ask the audience if anyone can tell me what is the number one thing that people are looking for when they go on the Internet.

The answer is so obvious rarely does anyone get it. The correct answer is "information"; people want to find out something. Everything else is a far distant second. So if information is what people want to know about in your business then does it not make sense to build a website around that concept?

So you need to give the visitor information either by posting it on the site itself, or giving the reader the opportunity to get the information by sending you their name and email address.

Which leads us to the second most important thing that needs to be on a website, a call to action. What is it you want the visitor to do? Signup for something, buy something, or simply call you. Also it is essential that whatever it is you want them to do, it must be simple, fast, and obvious. So many websites I see and critique really fall down on this part.

Building a website that is both content rich and has a call to action can be done fairly easily and at a low cost.

Now do not get me wrong, I am not knocking website designers or the service they provide. All I am saying is most website designers are not Internet Marketers. They are not in the business of getting the site to convert; their specialty is to make it look really fancy and nice.

If that is what you are after then they provided you a great service. I would not argue against the fact that there is certainly something to be said for a nice looking website. However, know the priorities of what you need your site to be. Content first, followed by a clear and concise call to action, then looks and design comes in third.

A fancy website design is window dressing; it usually does little to draw the visitor to your call to action, and may even distract them from it. Also you need to understand that it is the window dressing that sky rockets the price tag of your website.
